GEI Technology & Equipment Innovation Outline 2018-2025

Background

The Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) is a major innovation in the energy sector. During the construction process of GEI, it is necessary to resolve various technical and engineering challenges. In order to give full play to the leading and promoting role of technological innovation, since 2017, focusing on key technologies and equipment, the Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) has organized around 100 experts to carry out investigation into requirements as well as development trend outlooks on technologies and equipment related to GEI, and then completed the compilation of the Global Energy InterconnectionTechnology & Equipment Innovation Outline (2018-2025).

Contents

Taking into account the development needs of GEI, this report proceeds with four research directions: UHV and new types of power transmission, smart grid, clean energy, and the operation of interconnected power grids, covers 13 technical fields, and the current status and development trend of 54 key technologies and equipment , and provides findings on patterns of development, future demands for innovation of each key technology and equipment. The action roadmap of up to year 2025 for innovation has been proposed.

Example

UHV DC transmission is characterized by high transmission capacity, long transmission distance and low unit capacity cost and loss. The existing UHV DC transmission mainly involves ±800kV and ±1100kV. There are 15 completed UHV DC transmission projects and 3 projects under construction in China, Brazil and India, since 2008. Zhundong - Southern Anhui ±1100kV UHV DC Transmission Project in China with the highest voltage class, the largest transmission capacity and the longest transmission distance in the world has been under construction. UHV DC transmission lines in the world have a total length of 24,022 km and total capacity of 103.6 GW. With the development of GEI in the future, the performance of converter valve and other key technical equipment for UHV DC transmission will be further improved to higher voltage level, larger transmission capacity, longer transmission distance and more compact layout.
